Nelson Romania Ministry
June 2010

Our primary city of contact is Lugoj which is located in central-western Romania. It is an interesting city of 45,000 which has feet in both the Old and New Worlds. It has all the modern conveniences, too many cars for its streets and almost no unemployment, yet you see "village wells" for people who prefer "well water" to tap water and often hear roosters crowing or horse carts clomping along the streets. The open air market offers farm fresh produce every day, sold by the farmers who grew it. The Timis River splits the city, serving in times past as a dividing line between German and Romanian residents. It was the birth place of Bela Legosi, the famous actor who played Dracula. Brick Factory Church
Our dear friend Daniel and his partner purchased a local brick factory and on the property is some old housing and about 2000 residents. Some of these people worked in the brick factory at one time, but now most of them are without work and without hope - they just live there as they have nowhere else to go. We know that our hope is in Christ alone, and Daniel wanted to work with these people, to improve their lives. He found jobs for some of them in his factory and for others in other places in the city. In 2009, a Baptist church was begun in their midst, a church plant from Grace Baptist Church in the city. Each Sunday services are held and the light and hope of God are being given to these people.
Grace School is one of the first private schools of its kind in Romania, a school with a Christian focus. It is a ministry of Grace Baptist Church and was begun in 2001. It was limited to a kindergarten for several years, but now has received its state accreditation and is expanding into its new building, adding one grade each year as students progress. We have had the privilege of supplying computers and library books. Starting in the fall of 2010, Grace School will have grades K through 3.

Surduc Lake

Surduc Class
Surduc is a training center for Bible study teachers from all over the Eurasian world. Three times a year, about 120 ministry leaders come from 10 to 20 different nations to study a book of the Bible. This book is newly translated from English into Russian and Romanian and is the book which will be taken back to their home countries as the new Bible study for the students to use. Some of the students come from very difficult areas to proclaim the gospel, and we not only hear their stories, but we pray for them and their ministry. Some students spend 5 or more days on the train to attend the 12 day Institute. The center is used almost constantly during the year for local church camps, VBS program, Basketball training camps, camps for young prisoners (with guards) and other youth and training activities.
Resita is an old heavy industry city. Both mining and steel were big employers in years past, but now, the mines and factories sit unused, empty and rusting. There is an outdoor display of railroad engines which were produced here. Many of the residents have moved on to other jobs, but the city still has life in it.

Our work in Resita is done in conjunction with the 2nd Baptist church. Gigel has been the pastor here since he graduated from Seminary some 20 years ago. Over these years the church has trained and ordained more than 15 pastors who are now serving other congregations in Romania or in the mission fields outside the country.

Marian Felicia Adina

Village Truck

One of the men who was recently ordained as a mission pastor is Marian, who is serving in the area of southwest Romania called Oltenia. This area is filled with spiritual darkness, but Marian and his family are bringing light to people who want to seek it out. They minister in two different village churches, one in Timna and the other Ciociuta, each having an attendance from 15 to 30. One of the members of the Timna Church gave some property for a church building to be built. This building is now under construction and we are hoping that it will be finished within a year. To Marian and his wife, it is a miracle. Funding always seems to come from thin air, bricks and workers appear and the walls rise. This church will truly be a beacon on the hill, because its site overlooks the whole valley. It is a wonderful location. Attending church services in these villages is not easy. There is no running water, no kitchen facilities, only an outhouse for bathroom, no heat and no air conditioning. Yet the people come to hear the word of God and lives are changed.

Resita Church
The other ministry which is going on in Oltenia villages is "English for a New Life" - ENFL. This program was originally started in Moldova and was introduced in 4 villages in 2008. We were privileged to participate in the first classes that were held. Marian's wife Felicia is the instructor. The desire of the program is to do something in these villages which directly helps the people who live there, especially the young people. Knowledge of English is a big advantage for employment and further education for Romanians, so this program is valued by the villagers. The program uses the gospel of John as its text for teaching English, both grammar and vocabulary; so, evangelism is being accomplished even while an accredited English course is being taught.

Timna Bible Study
We have 3 main areas of ministry
that we hope to work in:

  1. Grace School. There is need of a school nurse and since Tamara is an RN, she plans to work there several days a week, serving the students and teachers there.
  2. Lugoj & Resita - teaching, ENFL & preaching. As the opportunities are presented, we are both available to minister in the area's churches and at Surduc.
  3. Oltenia - we hope to minister here in ENFL and preaching and teaching as in Lugoj.
